13 Must Have Quilting Tools for Beginners (and Why I Love Them!)
Whether you're brand new to quilting or just looking to upgrade your sewing setup, having the right tools can make a huge difference. I started quilting in 2022 and quickly learned that good tools don’t just make things easier—they make quilting way more fun. 💛
Below are my top 10 must-have quilting tools. These are the exact tools I reach for again and again, and I truly couldn’t imagine quilting without them. Please note: some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission if you make a purchase—at no extra cost to you. Every little bit helps support my small quilting business. 😊
Fiskars Self-Healing Cutting Mat for Quilting, Arts and Crafts, 24" x 36" Grid
This is the perfect size for cutting yardage and smaller cuts. It’s not too bulky, so it fits well in most craft spaces. Plus, the self-healing surface means it can handle a lot of slicing and dicing without looking worn.
Fiskars 45mm Rotary Cutter for Fabric
This rotary cutter is affordable, safe, and easy to use—even for beginners. The grip feels natural in your hand, and it cuts like butter through fabric. If you’re on a budget, this one’s a solid win.
Fiskars 6" x 24" Acrylic Ruler with Gridlines
This ruler is large enough to help you cut yardage with ease. I use it to measure and trim blocks, cut strips, and square up edges. It’s a workhorse tool that’s with me on every project.
Fiskars Rotary Cutter 3-Piece Set
If you’re just getting started and want the essentials, this set is for you. It includes a mat, rotary cutter, and ruler. It’s very economical and gives you everything you need to start quilting right away.
Brother CP100X Sewing Machine or Juki TL18QVP
I made several large throw-sized quilts on my Brother CP100X before upgrading to the Juki TL18QVP. The CP100X is beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and packed with decorative stitches. When I was ready to level up, the Juki was a dream come true—fast, powerful, and made for quilting. It’s great for free-motion work and larger quilts.
Coats Cotton Machine Quilting Thread (1200 yd)
This is my go-to cotton thread for both piecing and quilting. It’s strong, smooth, and reliable. People will try to steer you toward pricey threads, but honestly? I’ve had expensive ones break constantly. Coats has never let me down.
Flat Head Sewing Pins or Dritz Curved Basting Safety Pins
The straight pins are perfect for piecing—they’re easy to see and grab. The curved safety pins are a lifesaver when it comes to basting your quilt sandwich. Both are essential in their own way!
SpraynBond Quilt Basting Adhesive Spray
Love, love, love this stuff. Pins are great, but this is better. It holds your quilt layers together securely without shifting. And no puckering! It’s a total time-saver.
SATINIOR Quilting Grip Gloves (12 Pairs)
Not the prettiest gloves out there, but wow—they work. They give you great control when quilting and prevent slipping. And 12 pairs? You’re covered for life.
Sunbeam Compact Steam Iron, 1200 Watts
Crisp seams are a must, and this compact iron gets the job done. One day, I may splurge for the fancy Oliso iron everyone raves about… but for now, this budget-friendly option works just fine.
Faultless Heavy Spray Starch (20 oz)
I would buy this by the case. I use it on every project to stiffen fabric and keep my pieces crisp. You don’t need the expensive quilt-specific sprays—this does the job beautifully and costs way less.
These tools have truly helped me grow in confidence as a quilter, and I hope they’ll do the same for you! Got a favorite tool I didn’t list here? I’d love to hear what’s in your quilting toolkit—drop me a comment or message on Instagram @StraightStitching!
